Nasal Reflex Therapy

Not only do feet have them: reflex zones are also located in the nose! Through targeted stimulation, all organs can be positively influenced, and health complaints can completely disappear. We asked Dr. Ingrid Eysn at MAYRLIFE how this works – and how easily you can perform this therapy at home. "Two minutes per position. With three positions per nostril, that's twelve minutes you invest daily in your health – and your entire body benefits from it," summarizes Dr. Ingrid Eysn, holistic medicine practitioner at MAYRLIFE Altaussee, on the effort and benefits of nasal reflex therapy. Why, then, has this form of therapy fallen into oblivion?

Nasal Reflex Zones: Long Known, Barely Spread

It was in 1961 that nasal reflex therapy was first presented at a conference in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg. Dr. Niels Krack was a leading researcher on the reflex zones in the nose and expanded the already known reflex zone therapy by incorporating directly acting essential oils. He published his research findings in 1975 in his book "Nasal Reflex Therapy with Essential Oils." Since then, however, no new edition or continuation has been published, nor have other experts released books on the topic. Although this form of therapy has been known for a long time, it is relatively little widespread. But it is no less effective for that reason. MAYRLIFE experts use this therapy form frequently because the positive health effects on the entire body are astonishing and align with MAYRLIFE's holistic treatment approach.

The effectiveness of nasal reflex zone therapy is based on the fact that there are different zones in our nasal mucosa that are reflexively connected to certain organs. By stimulating these zones, it is possible to indirectly influence the corresponding organs. Stimulating substances, such as carefully selected and composed essential oils, are quickly absorbed into the body through the nose and elicit a physical response. This has beneficial effects on a variety of ailments, ranging from respiratory issues to organs in the abdominal and pelvic areas. Thus, gastrointestinal problems can be successfully treated, as well as colds, migraines, and even issues with sexual organs.

Nasal Reflex Zone Therapy: 3-Step Application with Relaxation Effect

The area of the nasal mucosa is divided into three zones, which are stimulated sequentially with a cotton swab and nasal reflex oils. The upper zone (number 1) generally activates the reflex zones, the middle zone (number 2) activates the area of the sinuses up to the ears, the lungs, and the heart, and the lower zone (number 3 in the picture) reflects the organs of the abdominal and pelvic areas, the bronchi, and the head area.

Stimulation of the middle and upper areas (zones 1 and 2) mainly helps with breathing problems through the nose, such as chronic sinusitis or colds. Stimulation of the rear or lower area (zone 3) supports the treatment of digestive problems, gastrointestinal diseases, bladder infections, impotence, and complaints related to menstruation and fertility. It is also very effective in healing issues in the head area, such as migraines or tension headaches, jaw or tooth problems, as well as excessive stress or sleep problems.

Using a cotton swab and two essential oils, the MAYRLIFE nose oil 1 and the MAYRLIFE nose oil 2, the three zones of the nose are treated one after the other. "The nasal reflex therapy set from MAYRLIFE is specially formulated for us according to a unique MAYRLIFE recipe," says Dr. Eysn. You can read more about the ingredients of MAYRLIFE's nasal reflex zone products here.

The application is simple: Drop both oils onto a cotton swab. Position the nasal reflex oil at the tip of the cotton swab and the nasal oil 1 behind it. Now start with the stimulation of position 1. Insert the cotton swab into the nasal passage and keep it there for about two minutes. "Breathe deeply through your nose during this time," advises Dr. Eysn. "You will find that after a short time, the mucous membranes open, and you can breathe deeper and freer. This is also a very good preventive measure if a cold is approaching, or generally to strengthen the mucous membranes' defenses."

After about two minutes, remove the cotton swab and take a new one for position 2. After another two minutes, follow with position 3 using a new swab, and then treat the other nostril in the same way. "After the application, soothe the nose with the nose ointment, which you apply thinly in and around the nose. This has a pleasantly cooling and relaxing effect," explains the health expert. Specifically, the parasympathetic nervous system, part of the autonomic nervous system, is stimulated. It regulates the heartbeat and breathing during the relaxation phase, controls digestion, and allows us to regenerate.

"Our guests often have to sneeze, or their eyes water during the application. This is no cause for concern but rather part of the therapy. Both have a cleansing effect and are liberating," explains Dr. Eysn.

  • "The entire therapy also stimulates blood circulation and metabolism, which further promotes health."

Nasal Reflex Therapy: Optimal Holistic Therapy for Spa Treatments and Home Use

Nasal reflex zone therapy is simple to apply. During a MAYRLIFE spa treatment, guests learn the correct application and can then continue the therapy independently at home. "It's important not to work against resistance and to use a soft tip for the treatment – like a cotton swab tip. Otherwise, you can't really do anything wrong, except for using the wrong angle, but that has no negative effects," reassures the physician, thus alleviating any remaining hesitations about home application.

Nasal reflex zone treatment is considered one of the so-called endonasal holistic therapies and is suitable for daily use, both to alleviate complaints and to strengthen the body's immune system. The best results for chronic complaints are achieved with daily application over one to six weeks. "In the MAYRLIFE programs, we use the therapy as a supplement to promote health or preventively during times of increased infection risk," emphasizes Dr. Eysn in conclusion.
